Frequently Asked Questions

General

  1. Friends of Kimbell Community Garden is a community-led initiative to transform an underutilized space at Raymond Kimbell Playground Park into a vibrant urban garden. The project aims to provide individual garden plots, shared growing areas, and a community gathering space.

  2. The garden will be located at the northwest corner of Raymond Kimbell Playground Park, at 1901 Geary Blvd, San Francisco.

  3. Once our community garden is officially approved and constructed, it will become part of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's (SFRPD) Community Gardens Program, which is a lottery system. At that time, San Francisco residents will be able to apply for a garden plot through SFRPD's waitlist system.

Plots are assigned based on availability, and due to high demand, there may be a waiting period. You can add your name to the waitlist for our garden once it's open, and you're also welcome to join waitlists for other community gardens across the city.

To be eligible for a plot:

    • You must be a resident of San Francisco.
    • Each household/address may have only one plot assignment, shared among household members.

When a plot becomes available, the garden coordinator will contact the next person on the waitlist to offer the plot. New members will be required to attend an orientation covering garden access, member agreements, and best practices for sustainable gardening.

Volunteering for our garden group does not guarantee you a spot — the lottery system is a fair and equal weighted one — but we welcome and appreciate your support to help make this incredible community garden a reality.

For more information and to view other community gardens, visit the SFRPD Community Gardens page.

  4. There are many ways for you to get involved!

    • Committees: Volunteer your time and skills by joining one of our subcommittees (Fiscal Management, Cash Fundraising, In-Kind Donations, or Outreach & Communications). See more and sign up in the Get Involved section.
    • Events: We're hosting a fundraising event in Sept/Oct '25 and will be doing a live and silent auction. Do you have items or services, gift cards, etc that could be auctioned off? Are you an event planning pro? Contact us at contact@friendsofkimbell.org!
    • Spread the word: Share our posts on Instagram @friendsofkimbell and let your friends and loved ones know. We're also posting flyers in neighborhoods and bulletin boards. Print a flyer here [flyer coming soon] or contact us and we'll give you a stack.

  5. The project is currently in the planning and fundraising stages. The timeline for completion depends on several factors, including funding and city permitting processes. We hope to hit our fundraising goal in 2026 and will provide updates on our website and social media as the project progresses. Stay tuned!

Donations

  1. We are working on finalizing the garden design with a local landscape architect. The most conservative estimate is $850K but we are aiming to raise $1-2M to ensure we are able to fund all of the features and maintenance required for the long term success of the garden.

Budget will go to line items like city planning and zoning permits, materials, ground surveys, soil tests, clearing the existing invasive plants and leveling the ground before construction. Once our garden designs are finalized, our budget will be shared for transparency with our donors and the community.

  2. Thank you! You can donate directly from our site in the Donate section. Check out our sponsorship and dedication opportunities as well.

  3. Yes! Our fiscal sponsor, Greening Projects, is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations made through Greening Projects are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. After you make a contribution, you will receive a confirmation letter or receipt that you can use when filing your taxes.

  4. Many companies offer matching gift programs that could double or even triple your donation to our community garden! Check with your employer's HR or benefits department to see if they participate in charitable donation matching.

If they do, they may need our fiscal sponsor's information (Greening Projects, a registered 501(c)(3)). Matching gifts are an easy way to amplify your impact and help our garden grow!

  5. We have many sponsorship opportunities available and would love your support. Contact us at contact@friendsofkimbell.org and we'll set up a meeting to discuss your potential donation.

Additionally, you can check out our sponsorship and dedication opportunities as well in the Support Our Community Garden section.
